Sausage Tree Flowers!

Our Sausage tree is flowering for the first time! It was planted about 4 years ago and is going strong! For those who don't know this tree I will post photos of the fruit in a few months!! The flowers bloom at night and the perfume attracts the dwarf epauleted bat,it's pollinator. (Like I need more bats living around our house!)You need to make very sure never to park your car under neath this lovely shady tree when it bears it's fruit as those sausage like fruits can weigh up to 6.8 kg!People do like to park their cars underneath these trees for some reason...it's a bit like parking under a mango tree in fruit..only ten times worse in resulting damage to your car!) I made doubly sure all those years ago to plant our tree where no right minded (sober) person would want to park their car! There is no other tree like it on earth! You are welcome to Google for more info on this!

These pics were taken late in the afternoon, but the flowers bloom at night.

  1. We had one of these not too far from our front door when we lived at Raffingora in Zim. They make one hell of a noise if they come down on anything, and make a huge dent in the ground if there is only soil there!! Watch you head and don't picnic under it ;-) Diane

  4. I did go look it up and it is an amazing tree. I can see why you wouldn't want one of those fruits to fall on anyone, or anything. It says that the fruit, when fresh, is poisonous. That's a pity, because a large fruit like that could feed quite a few.

All in all, an astonishing plant. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I did write about them two years ago .. with some botanical information etc .. then mangled the info in the Okavango and boerewors .. we need to come back here for Cules' boere! It's here ..

  9. Hi Liesl, a great post about a beautiful tree.
Of course some people just ignore the fruit in favour of such a lovely deep shade to park under. Good idea to plant it elsewhere!
Leopards also like this tree. It's one of the trees I always look into carefully, especially along the Sabie River in Kruger. Deep shade (in summer) & nice thick horizontal branches = a cooool perch :)

  12. Now that IS an interesting tree! Amazing when you think about it how many different botanical species there are and each having it's own purpose in life.
I am about to look this one up. Thanks Liesl! Hope your weekend went well.

  14. Dark red blossoms just hanging from the trees. It doesn't get prettier than that. (Well, Magnolia trees with their white flowers are a close contender....)
